Old Computer Challenge 2026

Day 6, Friday

Worldcrastination

After yesterday's fiddling with the gaps in Texinfo's support for my planned little TTRPG, I didn't feel like continuing on that way today, in the little time I had between work, consoling my partner about new laws being passed that could basically ruin their profession, and other small tasks.

So I spent a bit of the evening writing a few tools that might turn into a "Zettelkasten"-ish note taking system, doing it with Tcl and a bit of Tk for a change. It's fun to work with something dependency-free for a change. Also with no allusions of anything being "typed".

What am I putting in those notes? Well, ideas and details about this short RPG that I definitely won't finish in the allocated time. I probably should write a bit about that here, but it's late already, I need a good walk to sort through some thoughts before committing ideas to the world.

What I did today

  • Think way too long about names for fantasy earths that aren't just variants of "earth" or "terra". I thought about doing a pun about Texinfo there, but it just makes it sound like this is fantasy Texas.
  • On the other hand, why not fantasy Texas?
  • Trying way to long to wrangle output from /dev/urandom into something that looks like a file name.
  • Playing around with the ancient drawing program xfig, trying to find a way to create maps or even a whole RPG layout with it. I remember it a bit differently, but I might be thinking about tgif which doesn't come with my Slackware install.
